THE SPARK HUB COLLECTIVE
A Microschool Built for How Kids Actually Learn
Program Overview
The Spark Hub Collective is a hybrid microschool for grades K–8, serving families in Lake Norman, North Carolina and virtual learners. Our model is intentionally designed around short, focused learning blocks, deep relationships, and meaningful community connection.
Students attend two hours of instruction per day, Monday through Thursday, allowing for high-impact learning without burnout. This structure gives students the focus they need and families the flexibility they want, while maintaining academic rigor, consistency, and care.
The Spark Hub Collective also serves as a living model of the strengths-first, mastery-based approach that informs all of The Spark Hub’s work with schools, families, and learners.
How Our Model Works
Four-day instructional week
The four-day structure supports balance, recovery, and reflection. Students have time to engage deeply in learning while also building independence, curiosity, and life skills beyond the classroom.
Two-hour instructional blocks
Each session is intentionally designed to maximize engagement, personalization, and mastery. Shorter learning blocks support sustained focus, reduce fatigue, and allow students to stay present and motivated.
Small-group learning
Students learn in intimate cohorts, allowing educators to truly know each learner, tailor instruction, and provide targeted support and challenge.
Strengths-first learning
Instruction is guided by each student’s strengths, learning profile, and pace. Students move forward based on readiness and understanding rather than seat time or rigid pacing guides.
INTENTIONAL RECHARGE BREAKS
At the Spark Hub Collective, we believe rest is not a reward — it is a requirement for meaningful learning. That’s why our calendar includes intentional two-week recharge breaks, strategically placed at points in the year when students and families most need time to reset.
Traditional school calendars often push students through long stretches of instruction without honoring cognitive load, emotional regulation, or family rhythms. Our model is different by design.
Supports student well-being and regulation
Planned breaks allow students to decompress, reset routines, and return to learning refreshed rather than depleted.
Protects against burnout
Short, intense learning blocks paired with intentional rest prevent fatigue and disengagement — especially for neurodiverse learners and students who experience school-related stress.
Strengthens executive functioning
Recharge periods give students opportunities to practice independence, self-regulation, and transition skills.
Honors family connection and real-life learning
Families can use recharge weeks for extended time together, travel, field trips, or simply slowing down and reconnecting.
Community & Connection
Learning at the Spark Hub Collective is relational by design. We intentionally build a strong sense of belonging among students and families through shared experiences and connection points.
- Monthly Community Gatherings
On the first Monday of each month, students and families come together for community-building activities, reflection, and connection. These gatherings strengthen relationships and reinforce shared values.
Community Meet-Ups & Experiences
Throughout the year, families are invited to optional community meet-ups, enrichment experiences, and collaborative events that extend learning beyond the classroom.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Recharge breaks are not “lost time.” They extend our learning philosophy beyond the classroom.
During these breaks, families may choose to:
- Travel and explore new environments
- Participate in extended field experiences or community programs
- Spend unstructured time together to reset and reconnect
- Support students in pursuing personal interests or creative projects
Students build the skills needed to plan, prioritize, manage time, and reflect on their progress within each two-hour block.
- Predictable routines support organization and focus
- Students practice goal setting, task initiation, and follow-through
- Reflection and check-outs help students monitor progress and adjust strategies
- The four-day week supports balance, self-regulation, and independence
The Spark Hub Collective intentionally teaches students how to take ownership of their learning and responsibilities.
- Students manage materials, deadlines, and expectations
- Choice and voice are built into learning tasks and projects
- Educators coach students in self-advocacy, decision-making, and problem-solving
Accountability is paired with support, not pressure
Collaboration is central to how students learn at the Spark Hub Collective.

- Technology supports — rather than replaces — critical thinking and creativity
- Students gain confidence navigating platforms and presenting their work
